Relief from Back Pain

We heard an interesting article on NPR recently and we wanted to let you know about it because so many of our patients are dealing with back pain.
The gist is that the shapes of our spines may contribute to back pain, while the shapes of the spines of some indigenous cultures may prevent it. The good news is that there are ways to help your spine move into the more beneficial shape, according to the research done by Esther Gokhale, the subject of the story.
Here are some of the exercises from the article, which can be done while sitting or walking: (1) shoulder rolls: pull up your shoulders and push them back, then let them drop; (2) lengthen your spine by taking a deep breath and growing tall; and (3) squeeze your gluteus medius muscles when you walk.
